As many of you know I am all for providing animals with the highest possible quality of life; in chicken rearing for meat and eggs this means totally pastured free-range hens. As well as space and an outdoor lifestyle I believe that chickens should be allowed to show all their natural behaviours such as flapping, running, pecking, scratching, digging, clucking and laying their eggs in a private nest. Chicken housing should be low density to avoid competition and fighting and chickens should not automatically be culled after a meagre 52 weeks of life due to their perceived lack of productivity.
Compassion in World Farming is a charity fighting for the rights of animals to not be bred and forced into factory farm systems. Thanks to Compassion In World Farming we now have a European ban on barren battery cages due to come into force on New Year’s Day. This is "perhaps the most monumental victory in the history of animal welfare. It is a huge success story won by the persistence of so many." - Philip Lymbery, Chief Executive of Compassion in World Farming.
Everyday this charity fights to end animal cruelty and we should too!
