The other day I saw, or more rightly heard, a very peculiar thing. Bridget our big heavy gold lace Orpington hen ran out of the house, stood by the fence and CROWED! Totally bizarre and random. She is of course a girl (she is over a year old and lays eggs!) but it was a very distinct crow, not as doodly-doo as the boys but that was definitely her intention. She arched her neck with such purpose I was quite proud. In hindsight and with a bit of research I think she was trying to show her dominance to our two cockerels through the fence (they are in separate enclosures but are kept next to the girls for company). Bridget is very high up on the dominance league table and has probably been feeling over shadowed by the all the boys noise and wanted to put them both in their place! She has only done it the once and I don’t believe she’ll do it again but she’s definitely the one to watch. Beware boys!
